Literature Text

Smooth plastic cup
of psychotropic drugs
I swallow -
red, white, cream and blue
the strangeness of lithium
curling sleepily
on a numb
medicated tongue.
They dose me with
yellow melts
like a yellow brick road
paving me to reality
back into waking
curled and fragile
in a smooth plastic
cup of sanity
Another poem from my most recent hospitalisation.

I was hospitalised again for a psychotic epsiode due to type 1 bipolar disorder.

I love how you use opposites - the yellow brick road leading you back to 'reality', which feels more like fantasy than the madness. I suppose what other people call 'madness' seems very sane to the person experiencing it. It's the way the person has decoded the world, and it makes perfect sense to them, and anyone who doesn't understand and would call it 'madness' is like an alien.
