Every day
drug myself into sanity
and drip with the rain
every drop a thought
falling out of my soul
and tripping out of my brain.

I crawl screaming and sobbing
to the phone
and listen for hours to
the white noise of
the static dial tone.
My fingers shake
as I call
a helpline
the crisis hotline
emergency
suicide prevention
child youth mental health team.

The receptionist
is new.
she doesn't know
my voice.
she doesn't know
my face.

my name.

and the clock whispers twelve.
You hear my voice echo down the halls
a half-empty ward
a clear glass of psychotropic drops.

You crush my ribs
and rob my lungs of tears.
You kiss my wrists
and strip the bone
The silver constellation of scars,
the scarlet mouth of screams
softened by the gentle murmurs
of bodies creased with love.

You breathe the poetry I cannot speak,
you hold the fragile shape of my skull
like a bruised eggshell
as the nurses hold me down

You feel it in your lungs
when the needle slides through,
and the drop of blood i

Hospital Collection: NamelessThere's an anorexic patient with me
in the mental health ward.
I've never heard her speak
or touch her lips
to the plastic hospital food.
Her skull is wrapped in
the alien fingers of
a pale feeding tube.
And I wonder if she's still
the keeper of her soul.

Her wrists are as frail as
the silver threads
of delicate spider webs.
Her skin is fragile
and paper-soft.
I've never heard her speak
or touch her lips.

She's just another patient
(without a name).
Her eyes are lifeless,
lost.
And I wonder what that makes
me;
another patient
who sees only
her disease.

for fear of swallowing myself into the nothingness
that exists beneath the the patterned lines
and empty hollows of my skin.
I inhale, and smell like gravity
and the sweet echoes of sickened flesh.
Light fades, and the shadows stand, whole
over my body in the empty room.

Then, between the pressures of my mind
there was only silence.
A stillness in the absence of alien thoughts.
I'd wake in the middle of the night
or in the early hours of morning
staring into the mirror
into the blackness.

RelapseShe breathes in
and the light refracts
shooting into
her veins
like Heroin murder.
(I’m tripping down
every blade of grass)
overdosing on oxygen
in the cool summer morning.

The rain
brings hypothermia
like hailstones falling
bruising her body –
an assault in every drop.
(The vapour fills my lungs
with soft water
drowning life)

With every step
her bones break
like soft glass
(I’m so afraid).
she bites her lip
(until it bleeds)
And goes into cardiac arrest.

Reading PoetryI swallow distorted words
laughing as they reverberate in my throat
and slide down my esophogus
into the deep void of my soul.

Every sentence tastes powder-soft
like eating snow and sugar crystals
with the acidic bite of love-lost poems
and a forgotten muse.

We drink a white-wine spritzer
of verbs and ellipses
with a brandy twist of sorrow
and a tongue print of lemon
to counteract the pain.

I ask you for an absinthe kiss
and you press cigarette-stained thoughts
into my mouth
as the shadow-words burrow into our bones
searching for the truth.

I write villanelles onto your hips
and you slide into my wrists with ink pen scars.

Changing SightThere is so much horror in the world
that sometimes it's hard to believe it's beautiful.
When darkness gently swallows you
and becomes the light you breathe, the light you see.
Sometimes you have to look for it
in a lover's voice, the sound of rain on the city rooftops
the blush of winter, the soft tread of strangers on the street
whispered promises in abandoned places
the weight of a hushed word in a dark room.
Sometimes you have to look for it,
but sometimes it finds you.

FearClay and Michael are given anaesthetic for their shock treatment.
We sit together in the lounge, and Michael asks him why
he's not wearing the blue hospital robes.
"The shock shop won't let you in without them."
Clay points at him and screams so loudly we all shake.
"I need to lie down," he whispers,
and the nurses surround him
and gently lead him away.
He's so quiet and sweet on the ward,
but for a single moment, he's terrifying.
Michael is upset, and I try to tell him that Clay's unwell,
that we're all unwell.
He was hearing voices this morning,
and staring into nothing.
And I hope he's okay,
that he'll be okay.

I was running around the alleyways of melbourne
taking photos of the street art like a mad thing
and I think I ran into one of the graffiti artists!!
he gave me a crooked kind of smile and said:
"hey, do you mind going back to that alley there
and photographing that graffiti?"
I told him that I'd already photographed that alley
and he said "Cool. Thanks then."
Grinned and disappeared down the street.
he looked pretty damn arty,
and the request was a little odd.
I wonder which piece was his?
